This building is set into a hillside along the Hudson River, and serves as a weekend retreat for a New York-based artist.
Spatial transformations of a typical gable-roofed section create a tall-ceilinged studio space with white walls and warm
heart pine flooring. The landscape serves a source of inspiration and natural light, and a variety of apertures connect
the studio to its surroundings.
An over-scaled north-facing window infuses the space with calm, even light. East-facing double doors open the studio to
the wooded and stony landscape beyond. A deeply-recessed dormer window on the south side provides a muted accent of
sunlight which traverses the floor of the studio during the course of the day. A small skylight captures intense light
from the southwest in a deep angled well above the studio’s work sink.
The crisply-detailed exterior of the studio is clad in white cedar and lead-coated copper, materials which will weather
and soften with time, reinforcing the building’s connection with the landscape.
